5 Ways to Enhance Your Outdoor Space to Match Your Luxury Home’s Interior

ESTATENVY talked to real estate and landscaping experts to learn more about how luxury homes can keep their aesthetic consistent from the inside to the outdoors.

Creating a luxury home doesn’t end with interior design. The outside space surrounding a home is equally important when establishing a luxurious environment, from boosting curb appeal to ensuring that a design theme is consistent both inside and out. ESTATENVY spoke with Stacey Grossman, a luxury property specialist with Coldwell Banker, and Sally Callander, founder of Callander Garden Design, to learn how outdoor spaces can be enhanced to match a luxury home’s interior. These are their top five tips:

1. Create an Outdoor Living Area

Gone are the days of decks that don’t serve a purpose. More and more consumers are interested in creating full outdoor living areas that are equipped with comfortable seating and beautiful fabrics on cushions. That’s because homeowners are looking to create a space where they enjoy spending time with their families and friends, not just a place for a grill to live and nothing else. And this trend is especially true for luxury homes—creating an outdoor living space enables homeowners to add another room to their home that fits in with their décor and design themes.

2. Add in a Built-In Kitchen

Those outdoor living areas don’t have to end with tables and seating arrangements. Built-in kitchens are another amenity that are popping up outdoors. Stronger building materials and enhancements in technology have made it possible for homeowners to add full kitchens to their decks and backyards. But according to Grossman, if you’re going to go for the kitchen, it’s worth including all the bells and whistles.

3. Pay Attention to Landscape Design

Even if your home has an outdoor living area included, that doesn’t mean that you should forget about traditional gardening and landscaping. The flowers and plants that you plant in your yard have the potential to shape the way your home looks from the outside for years, ultimately setting the tone for the rest of a home’s interior. That’s why it’s recommended to work with landscaping experts if you don’t have a green thumb.

Callander told ESTATENVY, “Most people don’t know the names of specific plants off the top of their head. They also often have trouble understanding that flowers don’t come huge—it takes time and room for them to grow. That’s why it’s so important to open the lines of communication with your gardener or landscaper. Your expectations need to be aligned before anything is planted. Otherwise, your relationship—and garden—will end in disappointment.”

4. Create Privacy

After your outdoor space is designed and constructed, one of the easiest ways to make it even more luxurious is to make it private. By installing trellis with curtains, planting large trees or getting creative with planter boxes, homeowners can ensure that their decks and backyards have all the privacy that comes with being indoors without building actual walls.

5. Embrace a Personal Touch

Just like a home’s interior, outdoor spaces should have their own personalities and environments. These personal touches will not only ensure that your outdoor space matches your luxury home’s interior, but it will also create a one of a kind atmosphere that’s inviting and welcoming. Personal touches can include adding a fire pit, installing an outdoor television and sound system or integrating athletic courts and flooring for kids. No matter your style, these personal touches will take your home’s exterior to the next level.
