The Deck Doctor Will Fill Your Need for the Ultimate Outdoor Living Space

By finding his niche in the deck building industry, Jason Russell will bring artistry and craftsmanship to your outdoor living space.

Jason Russell, also known as “The Deck Doctor” and “The Rebel Carpenter,” is the owner of Dr.Decks LLC. In Tacoma, Washington. By designing and building your own custom outdoor living space, Russell promises to help extend your living room into the outside. A deck builder in the South Puget Sound area of the Pacific Northwest, he is known for his unusual technique of heat bending PVC decking and composite railing into works of art right in your own backyard.

To get his start, Russell worked at an apartment management company right out of high school where he helped fix decks on the apartments. After that, he started working with his father for a period of time to pick up the finer points of carpentry. That’s when he knew it was time to start something on his own. In 1991, Russell moved back to the state of Washington to start his business, Dr.Decks.

If you ask Russell, he considers himself more of an artist than a carpenter. Due to the nature of his unique work, every deck he builds has something new included in it—whether it’s a new curve or structure—none of his decks are exactly alike.

“Offering clients something completely outside of the norm that no one else is providing is helping me take my artistry to a whole new level,” says Russell.

A large part of Russell’s success is due to his ability to adapt to the changing industry and jump on board with the top trends. “One of the biggest changes in the industry is that consumers are going from using traditional lumber to man-made products.” Consumers are now looking for low maintenance decking, which means a decking material that is easy to clean and also take care of all year long. He works with materials from AZEK Building Products, Innovative Aluminum Systems Inc., and TimberTech to be able to offer this to his clients.

Russell especially sees the benefits of these products living in the climate of the Pacific Northwest, where lots of rain can easily create mildew and mold. Products that he uses must be able to withstand the climate with minimal upkeep.

In addition to new products, new lifestyle trends have changed the deck building industry. “The whole outdoor living concept has completely taken off and is becoming a huge factor into what people are doing with their spare time. A trend we are seeing is that everyone wants to bring the indoors out with their spaces at home,” says Russell.

Fire pits, outdoor kitchens with brick ovens and elaborate decks all are becoming popular outdoor rooms that have influences from rooms traditionally inside the home. More homeowners are looking to make their outdoor landscapes comfortable, beautiful, and functional all at the same time in order to be able to make the most of their space and their time at home entertaining.

For those who may be looking to hire a contractor for their home’s outdoor space, Russell suggests making sure they are licensed, bonded and insured. He adds, “Anybody who has had a website for over fifteen years can be trusted due to their longevity in the industry, regardless of the economy.”
